A member of the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Audu Mustapha Ganga, representing Magumeri Constituency, has drawn widespread criticism after a viral video showed him breaking down in tears while pleading with constituents to support his bid for a fifth term in office. The emotional appeal, which has circulated widely on social media, comes amid growing calls for new leadership in the constituency after 16 years of his tenure. In the video, Ganga, who hails from a poor background, appealed to voters by saying, “You know I am from a poor background, but I was able to do many things for you. I promise to give you better representation if given another chance.” His emotional plea has sparked intense reactions online, with many questioning his credibility and leadership.
According to Daily Trust, at least six aspirants have already acquired expression of interest and nomination forms to contest the seat, signaling strong competition and a desire for change among political stakeholders. The emergence of multiple challengers reflects a growing appetite for fresh faces in the Magumeri Constituency, where Ganga has served continuously since his first election. Despite his long tenure, some constituents feel that his performance has not justified an extension of his time in office, especially as economic hardship and development gaps persist in the area.
Public reactions to the video have been sharply divided. Some social media users expressed disdain, accusing Ganga of using emotional manipulation to retain power. Abubakar Hassan commented, “You now know that you came from a poor background after disrespecting your leaders, you know the governor will not spare you.” Others mocked his emotional display, with Comr Ismill stating, “As if na only him want to enjoy the seat… Let him cry till he lost his sight!” Mu’azu Hassan added, “It’s not easy providing food for the family. No food for lazy man,” while Mubarak Faje questioned, “Na him family house abi Na his birth right?”
Yusuf Mikail D’Fresh criticized the need for tears, saying, “If he did what’s right there’s no need shedding tears, he will win un-opposed.” Anas Hamza echoed similar sentiments, writing, “Na him papa house? Comot give road for a competent man jare.” Musa Yakubu Olagbaigbai urged for change, stating, “After 16 years… Abeg move on and let others breath.” However, not all reactions were negative. Lawan Modu defended Ganga, noting, “Hon Ganga has impacted the lives of youth and women through empowerment and jobs creation. Shading tears is not a sign of weakness.” Still, Muhammad Abba Kura dismissed the display as “crocodile tears.”
As the election cycle approaches, the Magumeri Constituency is at a crossroads, with voters weighing experience against the need for new leadership. The viral video has intensified public discourse on accountability and representation, setting the stage for a closely watched race. Whether Ganga’s emotional appeal will sway voters or if the growing demand for change will prevail remains to be seen.
