Plateau United has received a clear mandate from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to win the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title and return to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League in the 2027/2028 season. The club’s Executive Chairman, Alhassan Yakmut, disclosed this during a media briefing following the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NPFL board held in Ibadan. Yakmut emphasized that the management is fully committed to fulfilling the governor’s directive and has already begun strategic preparations to achieve the target.
Yakmut, a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), highlighted that the AGM provided valuable insights into the league’s vision for the upcoming season. He noted that reviewing the performance of the 2025/2026 season helped shape the club’s approach moving forward. “We have the mandate of His Excellency, the Governor of Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, to take Plateau United to the continental stage,” Yakmut stated, underscoring the political and administrative backing behind the team’s ambitions.
To strengthen their bid, Plateau United has secured the continued services of Technical Adviser Chief Gbenga Ogunbote, who has signed a contract extension with the club. Ogunbote is now actively involved in scouting and selecting the best players to rebuild the squad and avoid the disappointment of missing out on continental qualification. The last time Plateau United represented Nigeria in a CAF inter-club competition was during the 2022/2023 season, when they were eliminated in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League by Esperance de Tunis.
Following that exit, the club dropped into the CAF Confederation Cup but was subsequently knocked out by Libyan side Al-Akhdar SC. These setbacks have fueled the determination within the club’s hierarchy to make a stronger comeback. Yakmut stressed that the current focus is not only on winning the NPFL title but also on restoring the club’s pride on the African football stage.
The Tin City club’s leadership believes that with proper planning, investment in talent, and consistent performance, they can reclaim their place among Nigeria’s elite football teams. As preparations intensify, fans and stakeholders are hopeful that Plateau United will soon return to the spotlight as a force to be reckoned with both locally and continentally.
