Warri Wolves head coach Hassan Abdallah has released six players following the team’s 0-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Rangers in Asaba over the weekend, marking a significant squad overhaul ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League season. The decision comes after Abdallah assessed the performances of players during the match, where nine new signings were included in the starting lineup. Among those featured were goalkeeper Miracle UK Alike, defenders Sani Ahmed and Okon Samuel, midfielders Wisdom Tom and George Ekong, and forwards Alex Aguodoh, Town Eventus, and Auwa Abubakar. The coach also brought on substitutes Blessing Ndubuisi, Kennedy Osamudiame, Ita Peters, Yusuf Omotayo, Christian Mayoku, Daniel Ezegbu, and Emmanuel Utuyo at various stages of the game.
Abdallah emphasized that pre-season matches are crucial for evaluating players’ understanding of his tactical philosophy and their ability to integrate with the team. “Pre-season games serve as an avenue to assess your players’ individual performances, their understanding and adaptation to your philosophy, and their ability to blend with the rest of the team,” he stated. He added that after thorough technical evaluation, the club made the tough decision to release six players who were deemed not to meet the required standards. However, the coach chose not to disclose the identities of those released, citing concerns over their career prospects and market value. “It’s not necessary at this point to begin mentioning names. Doing so would affect their careers at their parent clubs or their potential market value,” Abdallah explained.
The 2026/2027 NPFL season is set to commence in August, and Abdallah is urging the Delta State Government for increased financial and logistical support. He acknowledged that the state has provided assistance so far but stressed the need for more robust backing. “It’s just that we want the state government to support us very, very well — financially and otherwise,” he pleaded. “And I think they have been doing that. But like the proverbial Oliver Twist, we need even more of their maximum support.” Despite the challenges, Abdallah remains optimistic about the team’s progress, stating that preparations are moving forward positively. His squad reshaping signals a clear intent to rebuild and strengthen Warri Wolves for a more competitive season ahead. The club’s focus now shifts to finalizing the remaining roster and preparing for the upcoming campaign with renewed determination.
