The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a total 12-hour lockdown across the South-East region of Nigeria on May 30, 2026, to mark what it calls “Biafran Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day.” The directive, issued by IPOB’s Directorate of State and signed by spokesperson Mr. C. Okadigbo, calls for complete cessation of all activities from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that day. The group described the event as a solemn tribute to those who died in the struggle for Biafra’s self-determination, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
IPOB stated that May 30 is dedicated to remembering the men, women, and children who lost their lives fighting for Biafran freedom. In its statement, the group emphasized that the sacrifices made during the war remain a core part of Biafran identity and history. “On May 30th, we pause to remember and honour the men, women, and children who lost their lives fighting for Biafra’s freedom,” the statement read. “Fighting for our freedom from 1967 to 2026. Their sacrifice in the struggle for our self-determination remains a defining part of our history and identity.”
Residents are urged to observe the day through reflection, prayer, and symbolic acts of remembrance. IPOB encouraged people to light candles, hold moments of silence, or gather with families to share stories of the fallen. The group stressed that the day should be one of sober reflection, urging Nigerians to keep alive the memories of those who died for Biafra’s cause. “May 30th is a day of sober reflection, let us keep alive the memories of those who died for the cause of Biafra, and let their sacrifice remind us why the ideals of freedom, dignity, and justice must not be forgotten or extinguished,” the statement added.
The lockdown will cover what IPOB refers to as “Biafraland,” encompassing the South-East states. During the 12-hour period, there will be no vehicular movement except for emergency services. Markets, offices, schools, banks, and transport companies are instructed to remain closed. Parents, school administrators, and market leaders are advised to keep children and workers at home to avoid potential conflict with security forces. IPOB warned that individuals should avoid being caught in the middle of “trigger happy Nigeria terrorist security officers.”
The group claims it has officially notified all governors in the South-East about the planned shutdown. It also stated that other stakeholders will be formally informed by the start of the following week. IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to remembering the fallen, declaring: “We remember them! We honour them! We MUST not forget their sacrifice.”
As the date approaches, the announcement is expected to spark heightened security concerns and public debate across the South-East region. The planned lockdown underscores ongoing tensions surrounding Biafran separatist movements and their calls for remembrance and recognition.
