Troops Destroy Suspected Terrorist Camps in Kwara State

Troops of the 22 Brigade under Sector 1 of Operation Safe South-South have conducted a successful clearance operation in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, destroying suspected terrorist makeshift camps and recovering weapons. The military operation, which began at 6:00 a.m. on April 24, targeted suspected insurgent elements operating in the region. Forces departed from their base in Kamenji and advanced toward Tungan Mariga as part of a coordinated effort to eliminate threats to national security. The mission was disclosed in a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) by Zagazola Makama, a respected counter-insurgency and security expert focused on the Lake Chad region.

During the operation, troops discovered and destroyed suspected terrorist camps located in Nuku village. The camps were reportedly used as hideouts by armed insurgents, and their destruction marks a significant blow to their operational capacity in the area. According to Makama, six Dane guns were recovered from the hideouts, further weakening the insurgents’ arsenal. The seizure of these weapons underscores the effectiveness of the military’s intelligence and planning in targeting enemy strongholds.

After securing the camps, the troops moved to Woro village, where the commanding officer addressed personnel and conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the operation. This visit was intended to boost troop morale and ensure that the mission remained on track. The officer’s presence also served as a reinforcement of leadership and accountability within the unit. Sources indicated that the operation faced no resistance, highlighting the element of surprise and the precision with which the troops executed their mission.

To enhance combat effectiveness, the 22 Brigade was reinforced with an additional armoured personnel carrier mounted with a QJC weapon system. This equipment upgrade is expected to improve the unit’s mobility and firepower, especially in challenging terrains where insurgents often operate. Makama emphasized that the reinforcement was strategically timed to strengthen the military’s ability to respond to emerging threats in the region.

The successful clearance operation reflects the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian military to secure vulnerable areas and disrupt terrorist networks. With the destruction of camps and recovery of weapons, the security situation in Kaiama LGA has been significantly improved. The operation also demonstrates the importance of intelligence-driven military actions in combating insurgency. As the military continues to expand its operations across the South-South region, similar efforts are expected to be replicated to ensure lasting peace and stability.
