Ilechukwu Reveals How MFM Transformed His Coaching Journey to Success

Fidelis Ilechukwu, Head Coach of Rangers International, has opened up about how Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) played a pivotal role in shaping his successful coaching career, as reported by Completesports.com. The 47-year-old tactician, affectionately known as ‘The Working One’, led Rangers to their first NPFL title in the 2023/2024 season and is now aiming for a second consecutive crown. Currently, the Flying Antelopes sit atop the NPFL standings with 59 points, with just three games left in the 2025/2026 season.

Ilechukwu revealed that his football journey did not extend beyond the U-13, U-15, and U-17 levels due to injuries. Despite this, he developed strong leadership qualities early on, often serving as team captain or vice-captain. These experiences brought him close to coaches, allowing him to absorb valuable lessons in team management and discipline. After football, he transitioned into business, working for a boss in Ebute Metta, Lagos, before becoming a full-fledged entrepreneur.

His passion for football, however, never faded. He founded Talented FC in Bariga, Lagos, to give young boys in his compound a platform to play. When financial challenges forced him to take over coaching duties after the original coach left, he relied on the knowledge gained from his playing days. He taught the boys basic skills, gradually building confidence in his ability to lead a team.

A turning point came when the team relocated to the University of Lagos, near the MFM compound. Church authorities approached them with interest in adopting the team and forming an official club. They asked Ilechukwu to become the coach, even though he initially resisted, saying he was not the team’s coach. Around 2006/2007, he began being called ‘coach’ by the players and supporters.

MFM’s support grew stronger after the team won a church tournament as best losers. Ilechukwu was advised to pursue formal coaching education instead of traveling to South Africa to expand his business. He eventually enrolled at the Nigeria Institute for Sports (NIS) after three months of hesitation. He spent 13 years with MFM, progressing from amateur to semi-professional and eventually reaching the NPFL.

After his tenure with MFM, he coached Heartland for two seasons and Plateau United for another two before joining Enugu Rangers. His journey from a grassroots entrepreneur to a top-flight coach underscores the transformative power of mentorship and faith. Ilechukwu’s story continues to inspire young Nigerians who dream of making it in football, even without a professional playing background. His current pursuit of a second NPFL title with Rangers highlights his enduring impact on Nigerian football.
