Taaooma Reveals How Her Mum Inspires Her Viral Skits

Nigerian comedian and content creator Taaooma has revealed the behind-the-scenes process behind her popular skits, highlighting how she overcomes creative blocks and draws inspiration from everyday life, especially her mother and the quirks of African parenting. Speaking during the United States Mission in Nigeria’s 250th Independence Day celebration in Lagos, Taaooma opened up about the challenges of generating fresh content and how she recharges her creativity when needed. She emphasized that running out of ideas is natural, but she always finds ways to recoup and rejuvenate before returning to work.

Taaooma shared that her comedy often stems from observing real-life situations, particularly the humorous and sometimes outrageous behaviors of parents. She pointed to her own mother as a primary source of inspiration, noting that many of the funny moments in her skits are based on things her mum does. “I just take the ideas and put my own spice on them. If you sit down and think about the things your mum does, there are so many funny and crazy things,” she said. This approach allows her to connect with audiences who recognize these familiar family dynamics.

The comedian also stressed the importance of being selective about the content she consumes. Rather than scrolling through random online material, she deliberately watches content that stimulates her creativity and nurtures her mind. “I don’t just consume any kind of content. I consume things that I know will inspire me, things that are good for my brain, not just brainwash content,” she added. This mindful consumption helps her maintain a steady flow of fresh, meaningful ideas.

Motherhood has also deeply influenced her creative journey. Taaooma revealed that many of the situations she now portrays in her skits are drawn from her real-life experiences as a parent. “There are so many things that I’m doing now. I’m doing them for real, for real,” she said, highlighting the authenticity that now defines her work.

One of her most beloved characters, Quadri, was originally intended as a minor role. “Quadri was actually a waka-pass role. It was never meant to stay,” she explained. However, audience response led her to develop the character further. She described Quadri as a typical Ilorin boy—rebellious, blunt, and unafraid to speak his mind. “Everybody has a Quadri character in their life,” she said, explaining why the character resonates with viewers.

When asked if she intentionally creates characters representing different regions of Nigeria, Taaooma dismissed the idea. While she values promoting Nigerian culture, she insists the diversity in her characters emerges naturally. “I don’t sit down and say, ‘Let me pick a character from this region or that region.’ I just do it according to how it comes,” she said. Her organic approach continues to resonate with audiences across the country.

As Taaooma continues to evolve as a creator, her blend of personal experience, cultural observation, and thoughtful content consumption ensures her comedy remains both relatable and impactful. Her journey reflects the growing influence of Nigerian digital content and its power to reflect everyday life with humor and authenticity.
