The sister of slain National Youth Service Corps member Abdulsamad Jamiu has revealed disturbing details about the circumstances surrounding her brother’s death in Abuja, contradicting the Nigerian Army’s official account. Jamiu Farida, who was present during the incident, described how she was awakened by gunfire in the early hours of the morning and later forced by soldiers to view what they claimed were signs of intrusion. The Nigerian Army had previously stated that Jamiu died during a shootout between troops and armed robbers, but the family has rejected this narrative, alleging that he was killed under suspicious circumstances.
Farida told The Cable that three soldiers entered her room and urged her to come outside, claiming they needed her to confirm damage in the compound. She recalled pleading with them not to harm her as she stepped out. The soldiers then showed her a broken barbed wire and a shattered window, asking if the window had been damaged before. She confirmed that it had been intact, which led her to believe they were informing her that her brother had escaped. However, her assumption turned into horror when she tried to enter his room.
She said she was dragged by the soldiers and, during the struggle, discovered her brother lying dead with part of his brain exposed on the floor. “I thought they wanted to tell me that my brother escaped… but they dragged me, and I struggled with them until I discovered that my brother was dead and part of his brain was beside him on the floor,” she recounted. Overcome with grief, she screamed, but one of the soldiers threatened her, demanding she stop making noise. “I was just screaming… and one of the soldiers was threatening me and asked me to shut up,” she added.
Farida also alleged that after the incident, soldiers summoned local vigilantes to clean up the blood-stained scene. “The soldiers called the vigilantes to clean the blood… They also packed his brain and buried it in the house close by,” she claimed. These revelations have intensified public scrutiny over the military’s handling of the case and raised serious questions about transparency and accountability. The family continues to demand a full and independent investigation into the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, calling for justice and answers.
As the investigation unfolds, the story has drawn widespread attention across Nigeria, highlighting concerns about security operations and civilian safety in the capital. The incident underscores the need for thorough and impartial probes into deaths involving security forces, especially when conflicting narratives emerge. The fate of Jamiu’s remains and the truth behind his death remain central to the ongoing public demand for justice.
