Kwara United goalkeeper coach Dele Aiyenugba has expressed confidence that Malian shot-stopper Khalifa Quattara will adapt well and excel in the EuroMatch/Nigeria Premier Football League. Quattara made his debut for the Ilorin-based club in their opening match of the 2026/2027 season, a 2-2 draw against Kano Pillars at the Kwara State Stadium. Aiyenugba, who is now guiding the team’s goalkeeping unit, believes the squad has strong depth in that position, despite the early-season result.
Speaking to Completesports.com, Aiyenugba emphasized his focus on the goalkeeping department, noting that while the team as a whole has quality players, he can only speak authoritatively about the goalkeepers. He highlighted Quattara’s first appearance as a positive step, stressing that the Malian keeper is still settling into the league. “We’ve other goalkeepers too and I think goalkeeping won’t be a problem for us this season,” Aiyenugba stated, showing optimism for Kwara United’s defensive stability.
Aiyenugba, a former Nigeria Super Eagles goalkeeper, boasts an impressive career both domestically and internationally. He earned back-to-back CAF Champions League titles with Enyimba in 2003 and 2004, cementing his legacy as one of Nigeria’s top custodians. His reputation for stopping penalty kicks remains legendary, and when asked if another goalkeeper could follow in his footsteps, he responded affirmatively. “Yes, I think it’s a possibility. It’s just about hard work, focus and concentration. There’s no doubt it can be possible,” he said.
The experienced coach, who also played for Bnei Yehuda in Israel before returning to Nigeria, has continued his football journey through coaching. After playing for several Israeli clubs including Hapoel Ashkelon, Hapoel Iksal, and Hapoel Afula between 2007 and 2020, he returned to his boyhood club, Kwara United, in 2024. Having earned 17 caps for Nigeria during his playing days, Aiyenugba officially retired from professional football that same year and transitioned into coaching.
His son, Daniel Aiyenugba, currently plays as goalkeeper for Beyond Limit FC, continuing the family’s football legacy. With Aiyenugba’s guidance and the arrival of Quattara, Kwara United appears poised to strengthen its goalkeeping options. The club’s performance in the upcoming fixtures will be closely watched as they aim to build on their opening-day result.
