Police Sack Usman Nuhu and Others Over Mene Ogidis Death

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers following the unlawful killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State. The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, sparked widespread outrage on social media and prompted a swift internal investigation. The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed the dismissals and stated that the officers would face criminal prosecution for their actions.

The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was reportedly apprehended during a police operation in Effurun, under the jurisdiction of the Effurun Area Command. Police initially claimed that Ogidi was caught attempting to deliver a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition. However, the circumstances surrounding his death raised serious concerns about the use of excessive force and adherence to police protocols.

Following the incident, ASP Usman and his team were taken into custody and transferred to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary review. The Force Disciplinary Committee conducted a thorough investigation into the events leading to Ogidi’s death. The committee found that the officers violated established rules on the use of firearms and acted outside the boundaries of lawful police conduct.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the recommendation for immediate dismissal after reviewing the committee’s findings. The decision was then forwarded to the Police Service Commission for formal confirmation, in accordance with standard disciplinary procedures. Disu emphasized that no officer is above the law and that the use of force must always be justified and proportionate.

In a statement, the IGP said, “Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.” He added, “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

The case has reignited public debate about police accountability and reform in Nigeria. Citizens and civil society groups have called for greater transparency and stricter oversight of law enforcement operations. The police force’s swift action in this case may be seen as a step toward restoring public trust, though continued vigilance will be necessary to ensure such incidents do not recur.

As the officers now face criminal charges, the case sets a precedent for accountability within the Nigeria Police Force. The outcome will be closely watched by both the public and legal experts as a test of whether systemic reforms are truly taking root.
