Former Super Eagles defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has expressed strong confidence in Warri Wolves’ ability to deliver improved performance in the upcoming 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, following his appointment as the club’s Coordinator. Speaking from Warri on Saturday, the 37-year-old emphasized that a new squad built on discipline, character, and commitment will be key to achieving the club’s goals. Egwuekwe, who was appointed by Delta State Sports Commission Chairman Hon. Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori during the 2025/2026 season, believes the team is poised for a better campaign this time around.
Egwuekwe highlighted the importance of strategic recruitment and pre-season preparation in rebuilding the club. He praised the vision of the sports commission chairman for bringing former Warri Wolves players into leadership roles, noting that experience and local knowledge are vital assets. Alongside Head Coach Hassan Abd’Allah, Egwuekwe aims to assemble a young, talented, and dedicated squad to drive the club’s resurgence. The pre-season camp is set to begin shortly, marking the next phase in the team’s preparation for the new league season.
The former centre-back stressed that he intends to contribute his extensive experience from playing in the NPFL and internationally to support the coaching staff’s philosophy. His career spanned several clubs including Nasarawa United, Yerima Strikers, KuPS in Finland, SuperSport United, Al-Nasr Benghazi in Libya, and Rivers United. Egwuekwe also represented Nigeria at major tournaments, winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and earning a bronze medal at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN). He later participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, earning 36 caps for the Super Eagles and scoring two international goals.
Other former Warri Wolves players now serving in key roles include Austin Johnny as Assistant Coach and Abayomi Olorunda as Goalkeeper Coach. This return of experienced figures to the club’s structure is seen as a positive step toward restoring pride and competitiveness. Warri Wolves finished the 2025/2026 NPFL season in 13th place with 49 points, a result that Egwuekwe and his team aim to surpass significantly in the coming season.
