The Oyo State Government has launched a daily environmental sanitation system to improve cleanliness and public health across the state, marking a major shift from the previous monthly cleaning exercises. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, announced the initiative during a press briefing held at the ministry’s conference room on Tuesday, to mark his first 100 days in office. The new system makes environmental cleanliness a daily responsibility for all residents, supported by increased government enforcement and public participation.
Under the new approach, environmental health officers are now deployed daily to monitor communities and ensure compliance with sanitation regulations. Residents are expected to maintain clean surroundings at all times, not just during scheduled monthly clean-up drives. This change aims to create a culture of continuous cleanliness and reduce the spread of diseases linked to poor waste management.
To strengthen the initiative, the government has reintroduced 930 environmental workers, including vanguards, sweepers, and waste handlers, who have been properly assigned to cover more areas. Two new compactor trucks have also been procured with the support of Governor Seyi Makinde to enhance waste collection efficiency across the state. Sweepers are now scheduled to work twice daily to keep roads and public spaces cleaner, and they have also been enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme to improve their welfare and motivation.
The ministry has also launched the Oyo Soro Soke Environmental Whistleblower platform, which allows residents to report environmental violations via mobile apps and WhatsApp. This digital tool is designed to encourage public involvement and ensure swift action against littering, illegal dumping, and other sanitation-related offenses. The platform reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and community-driven environmental governance.
In addition to these measures, the ministry has introduced a waste separation system in government offices to promote recycling and reduce landfill waste. The government is also collaborating with private partners to construct modern public toilets in key areas to address sanitation challenges in urban and semi-urban communities. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve environmental standards and enhance the quality of life for Oyo residents.
The daily sanitation system represents a significant upgrade in the state’s environmental management approach, moving from reactive to proactive measures. As the government continues to expand its reach and strengthen enforcement, the initiative is expected to foster long-term improvements in public health and urban cleanliness across Oyo State.
