NPFL Imposes N6 Million Fine on Warri Wolves Amid Disciplinary Action

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a N6 million fine on Warri Wolves for fan misconduct during their Matchday 36 fixture against Plateau United, which took place last weekend at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Warri. The disciplinary action follows a series of incidents involving unruly supporters who breached stadium security and disrupted the match, leading to a 10-minute delay. The NPFL stated that Warri Wolves failed to provide adequate and effective security measures, allowing unauthorised individuals to enter restricted zones within the stadium premises.

The league’s disciplinary committee found that Warri Wolves’ fans engaged in unsporting behaviour that brought the game into disrepute. This included acts of aggression and disrespect towards match officials, which significantly affected the flow and integrity of the game. The NPFL emphasized that such conduct undermines the values of fair play and sportsmanship that the league strives to uphold. As a result, the club has been ordered to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the incidents and to submit documented evidence of their actions to the NPFL within the stipulated timeframe.

In addition to the financial penalty, Warri Wolves have been handed a severe sporting sanction: they will play all remaining home matches for the 2023/2024 season behind closed doors. This means no spectators will be allowed into the stadium for their upcoming fixtures, a move intended to deter future misconduct and ensure a safer environment for players, officials, and fans. The club has been given 48 hours from the date of notice to formally appeal the sanctions if they wish to challenge the decision.

The NPFL’s decision reflects its commitment to maintaining order and discipline within the top-tier football competition in Nigeria. The league has consistently taken firm action against clubs whose supporters engage in violent or disruptive behaviour, especially when such actions compromise the safety of match officials and players. This incident serves as a reminder to all stakeholders in Nigerian football that security and respect for the game are non-negotiable.

Warri Wolves now face a critical period as they navigate the remainder of the season under these restrictions. The club’s performance on the pitch will be closely watched, especially as they aim to secure a favourable position in the league table despite the challenges posed by the closed-door policy. The NPFL’s latest disciplinary move sends a clear message to all clubs and fans: misconduct will not be tolerated, and consequences will follow swiftly and decisively.
