Comedian and activist MC Okrika has raised serious concerns over his safety, alleging that his life is under threat after posting a viral video showing a police officer in Cross River State allegedly holding suspected weed. The incident, which occurred in Ikom, has sparked national outrage and led to a late-night police search of his residence, further intensifying the controversy. MC Okrika claims he received multiple threats following the video’s release, warning Nigerians to hold the right people accountable if anything happens to him.
The video, shared on social media, captured a police officer in what appeared to be an unofficial uniform, holding what looked like marijuana during a public encounter. MC Okrika described the act as a direct exposure of misconduct, questioning why such revelations often lead to retaliation. “My life is at risk. The only ‘crime’ I committed yesterday was posting a video of a police officer in Cross River State allegedly holding weed and sharing it on social media,” he stated. He added, “How do we expect the country to get better when exposing evil makes evil come after you?”
In a subsequent statement, MC Okrika revealed that approximately 15 police officers raided his home late at night. “Just this morning, my wife called me to inform me that about 15 Nigerian police officers came to my house last night and searched the entire house,” he disclosed. He also accused the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of appearing without a proper uniform during the incident, and claimed the same officer seen in the viral clip was involved in the alleged extortion of a young man who reportedly lost ₦150,000. According to him, the officers conducting the search were not wearing name tags or standard uniforms, raising further questions about their legitimacy.
The allegations have drawn widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians demanding accountability. User @GREGORYONYEKA urged the Inspector-General of Police to intervene, stating, “Oga sir, are you not seeing this? The first video showed a police officer on duty with hard drugs, no name tags. Una don start ooo.” Another user, @ChijiokeBr24, criticized security agencies for targeting activists while failing to address larger threats like kidnappers and bandits. “So they know how to track him down to his house but kidnappers, bandits and terrorists roam free on TikTok?” he questioned.
Some social media users defended MC Okrika, calling for swift action from the police leadership. @amudaDewale urged the IGP to summon the DPO and the involved squad to Abuja for disciplinary action. Others, however, criticized the comedian for suggesting his wife should have resisted armed officers during the raid. @iykeinfos responded, “How can you be disappointed at your wife, a woman, what did you expect her to do to armed policemen at night in your house?”
As the situation unfolds, the case has become a focal point in the ongoing debate about police accountability, freedom of expression, and the safety of public figures who speak out against corruption. The public now awaits an official response from the police authorities, especially the Inspector-General, to determine whether the allegations will be investigated and addressed.
