Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson, a move that comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its reported selection of a South-South candidate for the vice-presidency in the 2027 general elections. The appointment, announced by Okonkwo on Thursday via his official X account, marks a significant development in Atiku’s political strategy as he prepares for the upcoming elections. Okonkwo expressed deep gratitude to Atiku for the confidence placed in him, stating, “I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me.”
In his statement, Okonkwo highlighted Atiku’s leadership style, emphasizing the former vice president’s preference for dialogue over confrontation. He noted that Atiku does not take offence when associates voice concerns, instead choosing compromise and open discussion to resolve issues. “Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” Okonkwo said. This approach, he added, reflects a mature and inclusive leadership philosophy that values diverse perspectives.
Okonkwo also revealed that recent discussions between Atiku and key ADC leaders have focused on safeguarding the interests of the South-East geopolitical zone. Despite the constraints imposed by the Electoral Act, 2026, he affirmed that the South-East’s concerns have been addressed and guaranteed within the party’s framework. “At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East have been discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground,” he stated.
He acknowledged the pivotal roles played by Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman, and Dr. Ekene Onwuka, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections. Okonkwo also extended his thanks to his family, supporters, and friends for their prayers and encouragement, which he said were instrumental in his appointment. “My sincere gratitude to my family, fans, and friends for their support and prayers, which God answered in covering my errors and colouring my efforts to pave way for this appointment,” he wrote.
Okonkwo concluded by seeking continued prayers for wisdom, courage, and protection as he takes on the challenging role. “I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he said. His appointment signals a strategic effort by Atiku to unify party factions and strengthen regional representation, particularly in the South-East, as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections.
