The body of former House of Representatives member and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Abba Anas Adamu, has been released to his family by kidnappers following the payment of a ₦50 million ransom, marking a tragic end to a high-profile abduction in Jigawa State. Adamu, who was kidnapped alongside another ADC politician, Ali Tukur Gantsa, was found dead after being held captive for several days. The two men were abducted on Wednesday while travelling from Kano to Abuja for an ADC party congress. Gunmen intercepted their vehicle near Jere, a town in Jigawa State, and forced them into a nearby forest, where they were held hostage.
According to sources close to the family, the abductors initially demanded ₦200 million, but after prolonged negotiations, the ransom was reduced to ₦50 million. While Gantsa was released unharmed after the payment, Adamu’s body was handed over to his son and driver, who had delivered the ransom. The source confirmed that Adamu, who suffered from asthma and hypertension, was denied his essential medications during captivity. The harsh conditions, stress, and fear in the hideout severely weakened his health, leading to his death despite efforts by Gantsa to comfort and encourage him.
Family members and political associates have expressed deep sorrow over Adamu’s death, describing him as a humble, compassionate, and dedicated public servant. His passing has sent shockwaves through the Jigawa ADC chapter and the wider political community. The abductors reportedly concealed Adamu’s death for some time before revealing it to his son, who was present during the ransom handover. The remains of the late politician are currently being transported to Kano for burial, with arrangements underway.
The incident highlights the growing insecurity in northern Nigeria, where political figures and public servants remain vulnerable to kidnapping and violence. While the Jigawa ADC has not yet issued an official statement, the event has sparked concern over the safety of politicians during travel and the need for stronger security measures. The release of Gantsa and the recovery of Adamu’s body bring a grim closure to a harrowing ordeal, but the broader implications for political safety in the region remain a pressing issue. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms to protect citizens and public officials across Nigeria.
