Nigerian music superstar Davido has sparked widespread admiration after wearing a customised “Bring Them Home” jacket featuring the names of abducted Oyo State schoolchildren and teachers during his performance at the FIFA Club World Cup. The powerful gesture, made on the global stage, drew attention to the ongoing kidnapping crisis in Nigeria and highlighted the urgent need for the safe return of the victims. The black jacket, adorned with tags bearing the names of the missing children and educators, became a symbol of solidarity and advocacy as Davido took the stage in front of international audiences.
The performance took place during the FIFA Club World Cup, a major global sporting event that attracts millions of viewers worldwide. By choosing to wear the jacket at such a high-profile moment, Davido leveraged his international fame to amplify the voices of families affected by the abductions. His action was widely seen as a deliberate effort to shift global focus toward Nigeria’s insecurity challenges, particularly the alarming rise in school kidnappings in the north-central region.
Social media erupted with praise for the singer, with many Nigerians applauding him for using his platform to advocate for justice and peace. Photos and videos of Davido in the jacket quickly went viral, with users sharing the images across platforms to further spread awareness. The message “Bring Them Home” resonated deeply, serving as both a plea and a call to action for authorities and the international community to intervene.
Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has weighed in on the security situation, accusing political opponents of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating the wave of insecurity to destabilise the government ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for local government council elections in Edo South Senatorial District, Okpebholo stated that the current wave of kidnappings is politically motivated. He insisted that there is no vacancy in Aso Rock and that the opposition’s tactics will not succeed.
“Is it by kidnapping children? Then who are you going to govern? There will be nobody for you to govern,” Okpebholo declared. He emphasized that true leadership comes through democratic processes, not through fear or violence. The governor also commended President Tinubu’s administration for its infrastructure projects and economic reforms, including the controversial removal of fuel subsidies, which he said have laid the foundation for national progress.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity, the actions of public figures like Davido and statements from leaders like Okpebholo underscore a growing national demand for safety, justice, and accountability. The spotlight on the Oyo abductions remains intense, and the international community’s attention may now play a crucial role in pressuring authorities to act swiftly.
