Angry Mob Burns Three Suspects Alive in Plateau Over Traditional Rulers Murder

A violent mob in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday night burnt three suspects to death after they confessed to the murder of traditional ruler Ponzhi Kwallak in Kwallak community. The incident, which occurred following a brutal attack on Thursday night, has sparked widespread outrage and concern over law and order in the region. Eyewitnesses told Daily Post that the suspects were apprehended while attempting to sell the stolen motorcycle taken during the assault on the monarch’s residence. The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation, leading to their lynching by an angry crowd.

The traditional ruler, Ponzhi Kwallak, was attacked in his home on Thursday night by armed assailants who robbed him of his motorcycle, mobile phone, and other valuables before killing him. The brutal murder sent shockwaves through the community, plunging it into mourning and triggering a tense manhunt for those responsible. Community members quickly mobilized, and the three suspects were captured in the early hours of Friday while trying to dispose of the stolen motorcycle in a nearby area.

According to a resident who witnessed the lynching, some youths initially tried to hand the suspects over to security agents. However, a larger group of agitated community members overpowered them, seized the suspects, and set them ablaze near the Council Secretariat. The resident told journalists, “Members of the community caught the suspects where they wanted to sell the motorcycle and they confessed to the crime, before the angry mob descended on them and burnt them.” The scene was chaotic, with no immediate intervention from security forces.

At the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not released any official statement on the incident. DSP Alfred Alabo, the state Police spokesman, remained silent, leaving many questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding the suspects’ arrest and the mob’s actions. The lack of response from security authorities has raised concerns about the state’s ability to protect citizens and maintain order during periods of unrest.

This incident highlights the growing frustration among communities in Plateau State over rising insecurity and perceived delays in justice. The use of jungle justice, while rooted in local traditions, often leads to irreversible consequences and undermines the rule of law. As investigations into the murder of Ponzhi Kwallak continue, the state government and security agencies are under pressure to address the underlying causes of violence and restore public confidence.

The killing of a traditional ruler and the subsequent mob justice have drawn national attention, with calls for stronger community-police cooperation and improved security measures in rural areas. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile balance between justice and vigilantism in Nigeria’s volatile security landscape.
