Suspected terrorists have killed four people, including a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, in a deadly ambush along the Jikamshi–Funtua road in Katsina State. The attack occurred on Monday evening, leaving families and communities in mourning and reigniting calls for urgent government action to secure the region’s highways. Among the victims were Saidu Nasir and Saidu Liman, popularly known as Kalipha, who were shot dead while traveling along the route. Liman was reportedly on his way to complete his monthly NYSC thumbprint, a routine requirement for corps members, when the attackers struck.
Saidu Liman had left his home earlier in the day in good health, unaware that he would not return alive. His body was later recovered with visible gunshot wounds and returned to his family, deepening the sorrow of his loved ones. The incident has sparked widespread grief among his friends, classmates, and community members, who are now demanding better protection for travelers. A security alert issued by Bakatsine confirmed the tragedy and described Saidu as a young man dedicated to his education and national service.
The statement emphasized that his death is a reflection of the worsening insecurity plaguing civilians across northern Nigeria. “The grief facing his family, friends and classmates is profound, as communities continue to demand safety over everything else,” the alert read. It also raised serious questions about the government’s response to repeated attacks along the Jikamshi–Funtua axis. “How many more young lives must be cut short before authorities ensure safe passage on these roads?” the statement asked, highlighting the growing frustration among residents.
Local residents have long expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation along this route, which has become a hotspot for banditry and violent attacks. They are calling on security agencies to intensify patrols and deploy more personnel to protect commuters and prevent further bloodshed. The latest killings are part of a broader pattern of violence in Katsina State and other northern regions, where armed groups continue to target vulnerable populations and disrupt daily life.
This incident underscores the urgent need for coordinated security measures and long-term solutions to restore peace and safety in the region. As the nation mourns the loss of another young life, the spotlight remains on authorities to act decisively and protect citizens traveling through high-risk areas.
