Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and now a member of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of his new political party. Speaking during a gathering in Abuja on Sunday, Obi emphasized the importance of allowing political parties to operate freely without government or judicial intrusion. He urged the government to respect democratic processes and give the NDC the space needed to organize and grow.
Obi made the appeal shortly after officially joining the NDC, marking a significant shift in his political journey. He highlighted the need for a level playing field, stressing that political parties should be allowed to build their structures without external pressure or legal battles. “We are pleading with the government of today, you know that I contested election in LP, Kwankwaso contested in a different party,” Obi said, reminding the audience of the diverse political backgrounds within the party.
He further appealed to the judiciary to end ongoing litigation involving political parties, urging members to avoid taking disputes to court. “We don’t want cases,” Obi said. “We are pleading with the judiciary to end cases in parties. Please let there be no litigation. Party members, please don’t go to court. We want to build a party, we are not lawyers.” His words reflect a broader concern about the increasing use of legal challenges to disrupt political party activities in Nigeria.
Obi also spoke about his vision for Nigeria, stating that the NDC aims to pull people out of poverty and create a society where anyone can succeed regardless of connections. “We want to build a country where a child of no body can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he declared. This message resonates with many Nigerians who seek fair opportunities and systemic change.
The gathering in Abuja brought together party members and supporters, signaling a new chapter for the NDC. Obi’s presence and leadership are expected to bring renewed energy and credibility to the party. His call for peace and unity within the party underscores his commitment to building a strong, inclusive political platform.
As Nigeria continues to navigate complex political dynamics, Obi’s appeal for non-interference and democratic respect adds a crucial voice to the national conversation. The future of the NDC will depend on its ability to unite members, avoid legal entanglements, and focus on policy and grassroots engagement. With Obi at the helm, the party aims to become a credible force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
