Eleven people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Sunday night at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State. The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which somersaulted and plunged off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the deaths, attributing the crash to driving under the influence and overloading. The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, provided details of the incident through a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi.
According to Ogunjobi, all 11 occupants of the vehicle perished in the crash. The victims included 10 adult males and one adult female. He stated, “All 11 people on board, 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash.” The vehicle’s doors locked upon impact, making it impossible for the passengers to escape. The FRSC team from the Itori Unit Command was deployed immediately after receiving reports of the accident. With assistance from local community members, FRSC officials had to dismantle parts of the wreckage to recover the bodies.
The remains of the victims were taken to the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo for identification and further processes. Ogunjobi described the incident as deeply tragic and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He emphasized the dangers of reckless driving, particularly at night, and highlighted the risks posed by speeding, fatigue, and poor visibility on the Abeokuta-Lagos route. The FRSC commander urged motorists to strictly obey traffic regulations and avoid any behavior that could compromise road safety.
He specifically warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stressing that safety must always come first on Nigerian highways. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of road negligence and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws. As the FRSC continues to monitor high-risk routes, drivers are being reminded to prioritize caution, especially during nighttime travel. This accident underscores the growing need for public awareness and improved road safety measures across Nigeria.
