VDM Warns Sunday Igboho Over Alleged Assault on Northerners: Risk of Escalating Conflict

Social media activist VeryDarkMan has urged Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Igboho and his team to exercise extreme caution during their operations against suspected bandits, warning that lack of proper investigation could lead to the wrongful assault of innocent people and deepen Nigeria’s security crisis. His statement comes after a viral video surfaced showing members of Igboho’s group allegedly beating Northerners accused of being bandits. VeryDarkMan emphasized that while addressing insecurity is crucial, the methods used must not create new problems by targeting the wrong individuals.

In a direct message to Igboho, VeryDarkMan said he had watched the entire video and stressed the need for due diligence. He warned that in the rush to combat banditry, innocent people could become victims, potentially escalating tensions across ethnic lines. “You and your boys have to be really careful while carrying out this job,” he said. “In the quest to solve one problem, you could end up creating another that may be even bigger than the one on the ground.”

He further advised the group to use body cameras or work with cameramen to document their operations. “Do proper investigations and carry out due diligence,” he urged. “You can’t always come out to say you were involved in a gun battle.” His suggestion aims to ensure transparency and accountability, especially in high-risk situations where accusations can quickly turn violent.

The comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users support the call for accountability, with @Foxyblueu stating, “This is the direct result of government failing to secure lives. Vigilante justice without proper investigation will only lead to more chaos.” Others, however, argue that expecting due process in the middle of a security crisis is unrealistic. @MaziEzike_Nedu responded, “While body cameras are a smart idea, expecting freedom fighters to pause for due diligence in a jungle security crisis is detached from reality.”

Criticism also targeted the government’s role, with @Bishophate pointing out past incidents where innocent Hausa men were killed in Edo State under similar accusations. @Cryptinin added, “They jailed MNK that never touched a single Northerner, but the animal Sunday Igboho beating and killing Northerners is walking free.” Meanwhile, @nossky questioned Igboho’s credibility, saying, “Sunday Igboho himself is a bandit. How can a bandit end banditry? IMPOSSIBLE! They would create more problems.”

Despite the backlash, VeryDarkMan’s message underscores a growing concern about the dangers of unchecked vigilante actions. As insecurity continues to plague Nigeria’s rural areas, the call for responsible, evidence-based responses remains critical. The debate highlights the fragile balance between swift justice and the protection of innocent lives, especially in regions where state security presence is weak. Moving forward, public trust will depend on whether such operations are conducted with transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.
