Police Neutralize Explosives at Akwa Ibom Custodial Centre in Security Operation

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully uncovered and neutralised explosive devices inside the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, averting a potential disaster that could have endangered lives and damaged critical infrastructure. The discovery, made on Monday, followed credible intelligence from correctional authorities, prompting swift action by law enforcement. Police confirmed that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, along with other tactical teams, was deployed under the directive of Commissioner of Police Baba Azare. The coordinated search led to the recovery of dangerous materials, including two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a 45cm burning fuse.

Additional items seized during the operation included a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a conduit iron pipe. These tools, combined with the explosive materials, raised serious concerns about an attempted act of sabotage or violence within the custodial facility. The EOD team swiftly rendered the devices safe, ensuring no injuries or destruction occurred. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, the operation was carried out professionally and effectively, neutralising any imminent threat to personnel and infrastructure.

Security measures at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre have since been heightened. The command has increased surveillance, tightened access control, and stepped up patrols around the facility to prevent any further incidents. Authorities have also launched a discreet investigation to trace the source of the explosives and identify those responsible. “Discreet investigation and technical analysis have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives, and to apprehend those connected to the dangerous act,” DSP John stated in the official release.

The police assured the public that the situation is fully under control and that no casualties were recorded during the incident. They urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and protecting critical infrastructure across Akwa Ibom State. This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by criminal elements and the importance of intelligence-driven policing. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on ensuring the security of correctional facilities and the broader community. The successful neutralisation of the explosives serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive security measures in preventing acts of violence.
