NPFL Star Chidera Reflects on Breakthrough Season with Enyimba

Chidera Michael, the 20-year-old Enyimba forward, has hailed his successful first season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after finishing as the club’s top scorer with 12 goals across all competitions. The young striker, who joined the nine-time NPFL champions from Ozalla Football Academy in Onitsha ahead of the 2025/2026 season, scored 11 goals in the league and one in the Federation Cup. He expressed gratitude to God and satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing that the team’s survival in the top flight was a major achievement despite a season marred by injuries.

Chidera, affectionately nicknamed ‘Moratta’ by fans, spoke exclusively to Completesports.com about his journey, highlighting that the focus was more on club success than personal accolades. He said he was pleased that Enyimba managed to retain their NPFL status, which he described as a significant accomplishment. “I’m happy that we didn’t drop out of the league,” he said. “I’m also happy that, despite it being an injury-hit season, things worked out well.”

The young forward acknowledged the challenges of transitioning directly from academy football to the elite level. He admitted the season was tough but credited his mental resilience and determination for helping him adapt. “I didn’t allow that to affect me,” he stated. “I embraced the challenge and ensured that I did my best every time I was given the opportunity to play.” He added that his performance in the 2025/2026 season serves as motivation for the upcoming 2026/2027 campaign.

Chidera also expressed deep appreciation to Enyimba’s coaching staff and management for trusting in his abilities and creating opportunities for young talents. He praised his teammates for their support, love, and encouragement, which he said played a vital role in his development and success. “My teammates also share in whatever success I achieved because they showed love, support and encouragement, which helped me, as a young player, to excel,” he noted.

In a heartfelt gesture, the forward presented his Enyimba jersey to Ikenna Osueke, the owner and sponsor of Ozalla Football Academy, as a token of gratitude for his mentorship and support. This gesture underscores the strong bond between the player and his roots, highlighting the importance of grassroots development in Nigerian football.

As the off-season begins, Chidera remains focused on improving and building on his achievements. His emergence as Enyimba’s top scorer marks a promising start to his professional career, and fans will be watching closely as he aims to replicate and surpass his form in the next season.
