Enyimba’s push for survival in the 2025/2026 NPFL season remains intact despite a 2–1 defeat to Rangers in Sunday’s highly anticipated Oriental Derby at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. The match, played behind closed doors, saw the People’s Elephant fall to their first loss in four games, but head coach Emmanuel Deutsch insists the setback will not derail their campaign. With three matches left in the season, Enyimba sits in 13th position with 43 points, while Rangers reclaimed top spot with 59 points after securing a crucial victory.
The game started with Enyimba showing intent, and they took the lead in the 46th minute through former Rangers winger Wonah Williams. Williams converted a precise delivery from Jonathan Jacob, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack to put the visitors ahead just four minutes after the restart. The goal sparked hope for Enyimba fans, who had been seeking a positive result in the regional derby.
However, Rangers responded with determination. Onyebuchi Ifeanyi equalized for the hosts in the 60th minute, restoring parity and shifting momentum. The turning point came in the 68th minute when Chidozie Iwundu headed home from a defensive mix-up following an aerial ball into Enyimba’s box. The goal proved decisive, as Rangers ended Enyimba’s four-game unbeaten streak and claimed all three points in a hard-fought encounter.
Coach Deutsch acknowledged Rangers’ greater hunger on the day but remained composed in his assessment. “Losing such a derby game away isn’t that bad. It wasn’t a bad game. We scored the first goal; they equalised and scored the second,” he said after the match. He emphasized that both teams were equally desperate for the win, adding, “They needed the victory the way we needed it, and it’s a regional derby. They got their three points — congratulations to them — and we will go home to prepare for the next game.”
Deutsch labeled the defeat a temporary stumble, reiterating that Enyimba’s focus remains on securing safety in the NPFL. He stressed that the team will regroup and continue their fight in the remaining fixtures. The result underscores the competitive nature of the league, with every point crucial as teams jostle for positions. Enyimba’s resilience will be tested in the final stretch, but the squad’s determination remains undiminished as they aim to avoid relegation.
