The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is set to crown its 2025/2026 champions on Sunday, 24 May 2026, in a dramatic finale that will see two trophies dispatched to Port Harcourt and Lagos — the two cities where the title could be decided. Davidson Owumi, Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, confirmed to Completesports.com that the league’s management is preparing for a dual-venue trophy presentation, reflecting the intense competition between Rangers International and Rivers United. Rangers, currently leading the standings with 65 points, will host Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, while Rivers United, second with 64 points, face Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex in Port Harcourt.
A victory for Rangers will secure them the title regardless of the result in Port Harcourt. However, if Rivers United win and Rangers draw or lose, the Pride of Rivers will be crowned champions. This scenario has created a unique logistical challenge for the NPFL, prompting the decision to send a trophy to each potential championship venue. Owumi, affectionately known as ‘Okada Air’ from his playing days, emphasized the league’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and fair conclusion to the season.
Owumi also reflected on the overall success of the 2025/2026 campaign, noting that it marks the first time in recent memory that the NPFL season ends on the same day as the English Premier League — a milestone he described as a testament to the league’s growing professionalism. He acknowledged the resistance often faced when trying to implement change, but stressed that dedication and consistency have brought the NPFL to this point. “No one is even interested in how we got here,” he said, “but we insisted the right thing must be done at all times.”
The season has also shown a significant rise in competitiveness, with 44 away wins recorded by Matchday 37 — a record high for the league. Owumi highlighted this as evidence of the NPFL’s improving standards and called for continued innovation. He expressed confidence that as the league continues to do the right things, more successes will follow, attracting increased sponsorship and investment. “When the right things are done, more successes will follow,” Owumi concluded, adding that these developments will ultimately benefit Nigerian football as a whole.
The final day of the NPFL season promises excitement, drama, and history, as the league prepares to celebrate its champions in a format that reflects its growing stature and ambition.
