A Magistrate Court in Birnin Kebbi has ordered the continued detention of Sufyanu Bala, a factional chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State, over allegations of contempt of court, deepening the ongoing leadership crisis within the party. The court, presided over by Magistrate Abubakar Koko, directed that Bala remain in custody until his bail application is heard on April 21, 2026. This development comes amid a protracted power struggle between rival factions within the ADC, with each side claiming legitimacy and control over the party’s structure in the state.
The case was brought by a competing group within the ADC, led by Abdulrazaq Iko, which is seeking to prevent Bala from presenting himself as the party’s chairman. Their lawyer, Garba Shehu, argued before the court that the action was necessary to uphold an earlier judicial decision and ensure compliance with the rule of law. Shehu emphasized that Bala’s continued assertion of leadership despite the court’s prior ruling constituted a breach of judicial authority.
In response, Bala’s defence lawyer, Ahmad Fingilla, raised objections, contending that the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction over the matter. He pointed out that the dispute was already being addressed at the High Court and that the alleged contempt did not originate at the magistrate level. Despite these objections, the court proceeded with the case and scheduled a further hearing, signaling its intent to adjudicate the matter.
Following the court session, Sufyanu Bala expressed his belief that the case was politically motivated. He accused certain elements within the state government of colluding with rival party factions to undermine the ADC’s internal structure. Bala reiterated his stance that the magistrate court had no authority to handle the case and vowed to continue defending his position through the legal process.
The leadership tussle within the ADC in Kebbi State has persisted for several months, with both factions holding separate party meetings and issuing conflicting statements. Bala is closely aligned with Abubakar Malami, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, a connection that has intensified the rift within the party. The division has not only weakened the ADC’s cohesion but also raised concerns about its ability to function effectively ahead of upcoming elections.
This latest court development underscores the fragility of party structures in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially when internal disputes spill into the judiciary. As the case moves forward, all eyes will be on how the courts navigate jurisdictional challenges and whether the ADC can find a resolution that restores unity and stability.
