How a Hotel Harboring Bandits Was Uncovered in Rivers State

The Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has taken decisive action against a hotel accused of harbouring bandits, with Chairman Charles Wobodo ordering the permanent sealing of the Augusta Hotel in Igwuruta. The move follows credible evidence linking the establishment to criminal elements responsible for attacks on communities including Ipo, Igwuruta, and Igwuruta-Ali. The chairman, supported by security agents and witnesses, confirmed that the hotel was used as a hideout for bandits and kidnappers, prompting immediate intervention to restore safety in the region.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Wariso Wariso, released a statement in Port Harcourt detailing the council’s ongoing efforts to root out criminals operating within the LGA. Wobodo emphasized that the Ikwerre council has been actively searching for individuals involved in criminal activities, particularly those linked to violent attacks and kidnappings that have unsettled residents. The sealing of the Augusta Hotel is part of a broader strategy to crack down on safe havens used by bandits to plan and execute their crimes.

The hotel’s owner has been directed to immediately report to security authorities to explain the presence of several individuals found on the premises. Wobodo expressed deep disappointment that the owner failed to provide information about the occupants, raising concerns about negligence and complicity. He stressed that while the council does not oppose hosting guests, owners must collect basic details about visitors to ensure accountability and community safety.

In a strong statement, Wobodo declared, “Today, we have come here with all the witnesses, we have gotten full evidence that they harbour the bandits and kidnappers here. With all the evidences we have, this hotel is permanently sealed off.” He further warned that the property would be confiscated if the owner fails to comply with the council’s directives. The chairman also urged residents to be vigilant and to profile individuals staying in their homes, emphasizing that simple information collection is essential for preventing crime.

The incident highlights growing security challenges in Ikwerre LGA, where attacks by suspected herdsmen-turned-bandits have become a recurring threat. The sealing of the Augusta Hotel sends a clear message that the council will not tolerate any establishment that aids or abets criminal activities. As security operations continue, residents are being encouraged to cooperate with authorities to ensure lasting peace and safety in the area. This action is expected to serve as a deterrent to others who may be harboring criminals in the region.
