Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has spoken out after being allegedly tear-gassed by police officers during a protest at the Uvwie-Effurun Area Command in Delta State. The incident occurred as he was mediating a peaceful demonstration demanding justice for the late Mene Ogidi, also known as Oghenemine. Despite his efforts to maintain calm, police reportedly used tear gas on the gathering, sparking widespread outrage and raising serious concerns about police conduct and civilian safety.
Gwamnishu, who had accompanied other human rights groups to meet with the deceased’s family, later proceeded to the police station to discuss the case. He stated that they had waited for hours for the Delta State Commissioner of Police, who had previously assured them he would address the matter. When the commissioner failed to appear, tensions rose as community members of Oghenemine’s hometown arrived in large numbers and blocked the road in protest.
In an attempt to prevent violence and restore order, Gwamnishu stepped forward to mediate. However, he claimed that instead of de-escalating the situation, police officers suddenly fired tear gas canisters into the crowd. The chaos worsened when a group of armed men, allegedly linked to the Ekpan Community Chairman, stormed the area wielding cutlasses and pump-action rifles. Several protesters were injured during the violent confrontation.
In a video shared on Instagram, Gwamnishu called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police to issue a formal apology and take responsibility for the damage caused. He demanded compensation for lost and damaged property, including his torn clothes and missing phone, as well as medical support for the injured. He emphasized that he was only present to mediate and did not provoke any violence.
“I wish to state that the Delta State Commissioner of Police owes us an apology and should take responsibility for the items that were damaged and lost during the incident. It’s alleged they are sponsored by Ekpan Community Chairman. We stand in solidarity with Oghenemine’s family,” he said in a statement.
Despite being exposed to tear gas, Gwamnishu reassured his followers that he was unharmed. In a follow-up video, he expressed gratitude for the public’s concern and stated that he would pursue justice at the appropriate time. “I nor cause any problem but only mediated, but Police bath me with TearGas. I am SAFE and unhurt. Thanks for all your concerns. I sincerely appreciate 🙏,” he wrote, adding hashtags like #EndPoliceBrutality and #alwaysfilmthepolice.
Social media users responded with strong support, with many condemning the police’s actions and praising Gwamnishu’s courage. The incident has reignited national debates on police accountability and the need for systemic reform in Nigeria’s security sector. As investigations unfold, the case continues to draw attention to the fragile balance between protest rights and law enforcement conduct.
