Gunmen Storm Palace, Kill Monarch and Family in Brutal Attack

Gunmen killed five people, including a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two other residents, in Olegabulu community, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, in a brutal attack that unfolded on Thursday night. The assailants arrived on two motorcycles and carried out the assault with precision, targeting the monarch’s residence before moving to a nearby compound. Security officials and local leaders have confirmed the incident, with one person also sustaining injuries during the violence.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers initially blended in with the community, speaking the local dialect to avoid suspicion. One resident told Daily Trust, “The attackers were not Fulani. When they arrived, they interacted freely with people in our dialect, so no one suspected that they were enemies.” This deception allowed them to move undetected until they reached their target. Once inside the traditional ruler’s home, they opened fire, prompting panic and a mass exodus of residents seeking safety.

The attackers, believed to be four in number, operated for approximately 20 minutes. After killing the monarch, his wife, and son, they moved to a nearby compound where they gunned down two more residents. According to the witness, “They operated for about 20 minutes. After attacking the monarch’s residence, they moved to a nearby house and killed two more people. One person was injured before they fled.” The swift and coordinated nature of the attack has raised alarm among residents and security agencies alike.

Melvin Ejeh, Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, confirmed the incident, stating, “It is true the incident happened. Five people were killed and one person was injured during the attack.” He added that security personnel, including the police, have been deployed to the scene to investigate and ensure the safety of remaining residents. The attack has heightened fears in the region, where insecurity has been a persistent challenge in recent months.

This incident underscores the growing threat of armed violence in Benue State, particularly in rural communities. The killing of a traditional ruler and members of his household is a significant blow to local governance and community cohesion. Authorities are now under pressure to enhance security measures and bring the perpetrators to justice. As investigations continue, residents remain on edge, calling for stronger protection and swift action from security agencies.

The attack in Olegabulu is another grim reminder of the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. With communities increasingly targeted, the need for coordinated efforts between federal, state, and local authorities has never been more urgent. The nation watches closely as Benue State grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode, hoping for justice and lasting peace.
