Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked a viral online debate after clashing with Instagram user Emmanuel Oveze Benjamin, known as bhenjy_cfr, over his political comments targeting former Osun State governor Gboyega Oyetola. The controversy erupted on May 19 when Davido took to his verified X account to criticize Oyetola, calling him a “desperate and embarrassing politician.” His post ignited mixed reactions across social media, with supporters praising his boldness and critics questioning his motives.
The tension escalated on May 20 when Emmanuel Benjamin responded with a video on Instagram, accusing Davido of only engaging in Nigerian politics when it involves his uncle, current Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. Benjamin questioned the governor’s performance, claiming he had not commissioned any major projects in four years and was more often seen dancing than working. He also challenged Davido’s credibility, suggesting his activism is selective and driven by family interests.
In the video, Benjamin stated, “Davido, why does it seem like you only care about Nigeria when your uncle is affected? Fuel is 1,400 naira, you never talk. Your uncle has been governor for four years, yet I have not seen him commission one project. Every time I see him, he is always dancing.” He further argued that Davido only becomes politically active when Governor Adeleke’s position is under threat, calling it a common pattern among political elites.
Davido replied in the comment section, defending his family and the Osun State administration. He wrote, “If e reach ur turn no support ur family …. Besides we are doin a great job in OSUN …” The response did not satisfy Benjamin, who released another video criticizing Davido’s tone as immature. He challenged the singer to provide evidence of developmental projects under his uncle’s leadership and questioned the benefits for the state’s three million citizens.
Benjamin added, “Davido came to my comment section with the thinking faculty of a 17-year-old child and said, ‘If you reach my turn, make I no protect my family.’ I have not seen any video of your uncle commissioning one project. If Osun is working for the Adeleke family, is it working for the three million other citizens?” He also compared Davido to Seyi Tinubu, suggesting both belong to the same elite political class, though public criticism is more intense toward the latter.
Davido responded again, urging Benjamin to visit Osun State before making judgments. He wrote, “Off ur camera and visit OSUN .. Thank you ..BSC holder btw 😊” The exchange has since gone viral, drawing widespread attention and sparking debates among fans, political observers, and social media users across Nigeria. As the conversation continues, the public remains divided on whether Davido’s political engagement is genuine or family-driven, highlighting the growing intersection between celebrity and governance in Nigeria.
