A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, was killed during a violent shootout between Nigerian Army troops and armed robbers in Abuja on Sunday, April 25, 2026. The incident occurred in the early hours at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, following a distress call about an armed robbery. Troops from the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they responded to the emergency. Upon arrival, they came under gunfire from fleeing robbers, leading to an intense exchange that resulted in the corps member being caught in crossfire.
Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Headquarters Guards Brigade, confirmed the tragedy in a statement released to Naija News. He explained that despite immediate efforts by soldiers to secure the area and save lives, Mr. Jamiu succumbed to his injuries. The military described the situation as fluid and highly volatile, with troops working under extreme pressure to repel attackers and protect local residents.
The Guards Brigade has launched a thorough investigation to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident. The military emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, promising to release findings in due course. In a heartfelt message, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, along with officers and soldiers, extended deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all affected by the loss. They expressed solidarity with those grieving and acknowledged the profound sorrow the incident has caused.
The remains of Abdulsamad Jamiu have been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital for proper handling. The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its dedication to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory. It also pledged to review operational procedures to improve civilian safety, especially as security forces continue to confront criminal elements threatening peace in communities.
The military urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies in maintaining safety and security. This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Abuja and underscores the risks faced by both military personnel and civilians in the fight against armed robbery. The death of a young NYSC member serves as a somber reminder of the dangers that persist in Nigeria’s urban centers, even in the capital.
