NPFL: Finidi Geffrard Outlines Objectives as Rivers United Resume Training for New Season

Rivers United Technical Manager Finidi George has unveiled the club’s strategic plan for the 2026/27 season following their early return to pre-season training, as reported by Completesports.com. The Port Harcourt-based side, who finished second in the 2025/2026 NPFL season behind champions Rangers International, will join the winners in representing Nigeria in the upcoming CAF Champions League. After a one-month break to allow players to rest and recover, the team reconvened at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex in Omagwa, near Port Harcourt, for their first training session on Monday morning.

Finidi George emphasized the importance of early preparation, stating that resuming training promptly will enable the coaching staff to lay a strong foundation for the season. He highlighted that the initial phase of pre-season will focus on improving players’ fitness levels, building tactical cohesion, and integrating new signings into the squad. “With the demands of continental football, we must prepare thoroughly from the outset,” Finidi told the club’s media, underscoring the need for discipline and consistency in training.

The technical manager’s comments came after General Manager Chief Okey Kpalukwu addressed the squad, urging them to remain focused and adhere strictly to the instructions of the coaching crew. Kpalukwu welcomed both returning and new players, reminding them of the high expectations from the government and people of Rivers State, as well as football fans across Nigeria. He stressed that the team has a responsibility to perform well and bring pride to the state and the nation.

Kpalukwu also assured the players of full support from the club’s management and sponsors throughout the campaign. This backing is expected to boost morale and help the team meet the challenges of competing in the NPFL, the Nigeria Premier Football League, and the CAF Champions League. The early start to pre-season training signals Rivers United’s determination to build on their strong finish in the previous season and aim for higher achievements.

As the club prepares for a demanding season across multiple competitions, Finidi George’s leadership and the management’s commitment will be crucial. The team’s performance in the coming months will be closely watched by fans and stakeholders alike, with hopes of a successful campaign that could see them challenge for the NPFL title and make a mark in African football.
