Edo Queens Secure Second NWFL Title in Thrilling Victory

Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) for the 2025/26 season after securing a crucial goalless draw against Bayelsa Queens in the final Super Six playoff match held in Port Harcourt on Sunday. Under the guidance of coach Moses Aduku, the Benin City-based club finished at the top of the standings with 10 points from five matches, claiming their second league title in history. The result marked a triumphant end to a tightly contested campaign, with Edo Queens demonstrating consistency and resilience throughout the playoffs.

The match against Bayelsa Queens, played at the Port Harcourt Stadium, was a tense affair with both teams aware of the high stakes. Despite intense pressure, Edo Queens maintained their defensive discipline and managed to keep a clean sheet, ensuring they secured the necessary point to clinch the title. Bayelsa Queens, who finished second with eight points, showed strong form throughout the playoffs but fell short in their bid to claim the championship.

Meanwhile, Nasarawa Amazons, who were also in contention for the title, missed out on the top spot after drawing 0-0 with Rivers Angels in their final playoff fixture. The result left them with seven points, one behind Bayelsa Queens, and ended their hopes of winning their first NWFL title. Rivers Angels, who also finished with seven points, secured third place in the playoff standings.

Coach Moses Aduku praised his team’s mental strength and tactical discipline following the victory. “This is a testament to the hard work, sacrifice, and unity within the squad,” he said. “We knew this was a tough challenge, but we stayed focused and executed our game plan.” The win adds to Edo Queens’ growing legacy in Nigerian women’s football, following their first title win in a previous season.

The NWFL Super Six playoff format brings together the top six teams from the regular season to compete for the championship in a round-robin tournament. Edo Queens’ success in this format highlights their ability to perform under pressure and adapt to different opponents. Their journey to the title was marked by strong performances, solid defence, and key contributions from their midfield and attacking players.

As the 2025/26 season concludes, Edo Queens will now prepare for the next phase of their campaign, including potential continental competitions. Their championship win is expected to inspire more investment and support for women’s football in Edo State and across Nigeria. The victory also underscores the growing competitiveness of the NWFL and the rising standard of women’s football in the country.
