Bayelsa United FC has been officially disbanded by Bayelsa State Governor, His Excellency Douye Diri, following the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to the Nigeria National League (NNL) at the end of the 2025/2026 season. In an emotional broadcast on Wednesday, Governor Diri announced the dissolution of the club’s Management Committee, led by Tarilaye Amankwe, the technical crew under Meremu Okara, and all players. He described the relegation as “painful and sad,” emphasizing that the club had returned to where it began, despite significant investments in sports infrastructure, including the ongoing construction of a 30,000-capacity world-class stadium meant for future generations of Bayelsans.
Governor Diri had previously warned stakeholders during the Governor’s Prosperity Cup that the club must avoid relegation, given the state’s commitment to football development. He stressed that his statements were not threats but appeals for accountability and performance. “I was making statements and appealing to players and the board, coaches and everybody, that they should ensure that they did everything possible so that our club remained in the Premier League division,” he said. The governor’s decision to disband the club was framed as a necessary step to reset and rebuild for future success.
All coaches, players, and board members are affected by the directive, and Governor Diri ordered that all club properties be handed over to the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Sports Development. An interim body will be appointed in the near future to oversee the reorganization of Bayelsa United FC. The governor emphasized that the club will be restructured with new coaches and leadership to ensure promotion back to the NPFL in the next season.
This move reflects the state government’s determination to uphold high standards in football governance and performance. The disbandment follows a pattern of strong administrative intervention in sports, aimed at restoring pride and competitiveness to Bayelsa’s football identity. As the new management takes shape, the focus will be on rebuilding a stronger, more disciplined team capable of reclaiming its place in the top flight of Nigerian football. The future of Bayelsa United now hinges on the effectiveness of this reorganization and the commitment of the new leadership to deliver results.
