Two Customs Officers Killed in Gunmen Attack on Kebbi Checkpoint

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have killed two Nigeria Customs Service marine officers in a brutal attack on a security checkpoint in Gendene community, Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The violent incident occurred around 3:00 am on Wednesday, leaving the community in shock and raising alarm over escalating insecurity in the region. The attackers stormed the checkpoint unannounced, opening fire on the officers who were on duty, before setting fire to the structure where one of them was sleeping. Sources confirmed that the officer trapped inside was burnt alive, while the operational vehicle used by the officers was also torched.

Residents of Gendene described the scene as chaotic, with the armed assailants operating for several minutes before fleeing into the bush. One eyewitness, Bello Shata, told journalists that the attackers showed no mercy, targeting both the officers and the checkpoint infrastructure. He added that the violence was sudden and unexpected, catching the security personnel off guard. The attack has left deep scars in the community, with locals expressing fear and helplessness over the growing threat posed by armed groups in the area.

In addition to the two slain officers, two civilians—a man and a woman—were injured during the assault. They were rushed to a nearby health facility for emergency treatment, though the exact location of the hospital was not disclosed. The injuries have further heightened anxiety among residents, who have long complained about the lack of effective security presence in the region. Many fear that such attacks may become more frequent if immediate action is not taken to address the security vacuum.

The Kebbi State Police Command has acknowledged the incident but is still gathering information. Spokesperson SP Bashir Usman confirmed that the command is investigating and will issue an official statement once the full report is compiled. He urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation until more details are released. Security analysts have pointed to the increasing boldness of terrorist groups in northern Nigeria, particularly in areas bordering conflict zones.

This attack follows a pattern of violence targeting security personnel in Kebbi State, where insecurity has been a persistent challenge. The killing of the two customs officers underscores the dangers faced by frontline security operatives in the region. As authorities work to respond, residents are calling for stronger military and police presence to protect lives and property. The incident is expected to prompt renewed calls for national attention and coordinated efforts to combat terrorism in the North-West.
