BBNaija Phyna Warns as Ilebayes Father Released After Arrest

Phyna, the winner of Big Brother Naija Level Up, has raised serious concerns over the handling of a domestic violence case involving her fellow housemate, Ilebaye, whose father allegedly assaulted her. The incident, which occurred at Ilebaye’s father’s residence in Royal Anchor Estate, Wuye, Abuja, on the early hours of May 9, has sparked widespread public attention and criticism of the police response. Ilebaye went live on Instagram in distress, showing visible injuries including a swollen face, and pleaded for help from Nigerians. Her emotional video quickly went viral, prompting immediate action from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that officers received a report around midnight and responded swiftly. A team from the Wuye Division, along with operatives from the FCT Command’s Department of Operations, arrived at the scene. However, they initially faced resistance as the gate was locked and dogs were reportedly released to deter entry. After a delay, police gained access around 2:30 a.m. and found Ilebaye with visible injuries. She and her two younger brothers were taken to NNPC Hospital in Abuja for medical treatment. Following the intervention, Ilebaye’s father, Emmanuel Odiniya, was arrested in connection with the incident.

Despite the arrest, Phyna expressed deep concern after learning that Odiniya had been released and that the two younger brothers were returned to him. In a post shared on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Phyna questioned the lack of thorough investigation before the release. She wrote, “Baye’s dad just got released and the 2 younger brothers given back to him…. Please, what kind of style is this one, no investigation, no proper investigation, you left him to go home. Nigerian police.” Her words reflect growing public frustration over perceived lapses in the justice system and the protection of victims of domestic violence.

The case has reignited conversations about gender-based violence, police accountability, and the safety of women and children in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express solidarity with Ilebaye and to demand better enforcement of laws protecting victims. The incident also highlights the urgent need for improved protocols in handling domestic violence cases, especially when minors are involved. As investigations continue, the public is watching closely for transparency and justice. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
