A devastating windstorm swept through Suru Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Wednesday night, destroying homes, food storage facilities, and property worth millions of naira in several communities. The storm affected areas including Sambera, Jeroki, Becinga, Nassarawa, Tunga Soja, Tauken Mage, Tunga Muminu Oro, and Ciwan Wanzam. Roofs were blown off, residential buildings damaged, and food stores obliterated, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of shelter and supplies. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the disaster, according to residents who spoke with The PUNCH.
The member representing Suru Constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Faruku Abubakar Maisudan, visited the affected communities to assess the damage and offer condolences. He described the incident as deeply unfortunate and urged residents to remain calm, saying, “My heart goes out to you in this difficult moment, and I urge you to accept it as a trial from Almighty Allah.” Maisudan emphasized that the scale of destruction demands immediate government intervention, especially since many households have lost both homes and food reserves.
Affected residents recounted how the windstorm struck suddenly, leaving them with little time to protect their belongings. Many now face severe hardship, lacking basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. The destruction of food storage facilities has intensified their plight, particularly for families who rely on stored grains and farm produce for sustenance. They have appealed to the state government, emergency agencies, and well-meaning individuals to provide urgent relief.
Officials from the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) accompanied Maisudan during the assessment. They assured residents that the state government is aware of their suffering and will deliver relief materials after a thorough damage evaluation. A SEMA representative stated that assistance will be dispatched soon to cushion the impact on affected families. The agency reiterated its commitment to reducing the suffering of victims and supporting recovery efforts.
Maisudan pledged to present the situation before the state House of Assembly and Governor Nasir Idris for swift action. He said, “I will ensure your condition is presented to the appropriate authorities so that immediate support can reach you without delay.” He also urged community leaders to compile accurate lists of affected individuals to ensure aid reaches the right beneficiaries. The lawmaker promised to follow up closely until relief reaches those in need.
This disaster highlights the vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events and underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and rapid government response. As recovery efforts begin, the affected residents hope for timely and sufficient support to rebuild their lives.
