In a significant development, the Senate has approved the formation of a joint ad hoc committee with the House of Representatives to tackle the rising incidents of xenophobia against Nigerians in South Africa. The committee, chaired by the Chairman of the National Assembly, will conduct a fact-finding and diplomatic mission to South Africa. The delegation’s mandate includes visiting the South African Parliament to formally express Nigeria’s strong displeasure over the attacks. They will also write to the Speaker of the South African Parliament and invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs to brief Nigerian lawmakers on the outcomes of their engagements.

Additionally, the Senate has endorsed a resolution by Senator Simon Lalong to review and ensure the implementation of agreements reached during a 2019 bilateral meeting between Nigeria and South Africa. This move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to resolving the crisis through structured dialogue and cooperation. The actions taken by the National Assembly reflect a strategic effort to protect Nigerian citizens abroad while maintaining diplomatic ties. As the joint committee prepares for its mission, the nation watches closely for progress in safeguarding the rights and safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.
