Two Die, Families Displaced as Heavy Downpour Causes Widespread Damage in Kaduna

A devastating rainstorm has claimed two lives and destroyed over 50 homes in Dokan Mai-Jama’a, a community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of assistance. The intense weather event, which struck around 6:41 p.m. and lasted approximately 40 minutes, brought violent winds that ripped off rooftops, collapsed buildings, and scattered household belongings across the area. The Village Head of Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Hamisu Tukur, confirmed the tragedy, describing widespread damage as residents struggled to recover from the sudden and powerful storm.

Residents reported that the storm came without warning, giving them little time to protect their families or property. Many were seen sifting through the rubble of their destroyed homes in a desperate attempt to salvage what they could. The emotional toll is evident, with survivors still in shock over the scale of destruction. Some displaced families are now seeking temporary shelter with relatives and neighbors, further straining already limited resources in the community.

The storm also affected Sabon Gyero, located within Millennium City in the same local government area. There, several houses were damaged, and more than 10 perimeter fences were destroyed by the heavy rainfall and strong winds. A major road in the area was blocked, causing significant traffic disruption and forcing motorists to use alternative routes. The combined impact in both communities highlights the severity of the weather event and the urgent need for coordinated emergency response.

Affected residents have appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for immediate support. They are calling for temporary shelter, food supplies, building materials, and medical assistance to help them recover. One resident emphasized that many victims now have nowhere to sleep, underscoring the critical humanitarian situation.

Emergency officials have begun assessing the damage, with a NEMA team deployed to evaluate the extent of destruction and determine the necessary aid. The findings will guide further response efforts by both federal and state agencies. This incident comes amid warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency about increased rainfall intensity during this year’s rainy season, raising concerns about more weather-related disasters in vulnerable areas across northern Nigeria.

As the affected communities grapple with loss and displacement, the incident underscores the growing vulnerability of rural and peri-urban settlements to extreme weather events, and the need for stronger disaster preparedness and response systems.
