Kwara Police Deny Unlawful Detention of 16-Year-Old in Theft Case

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed claims of unlawful detention of a 16-year-old girl in Arandun community, Irepodun Local Government Area, following the circulation of viral videos showing her at a police station. The command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that the minor was not unlawfully held and was treated in accordance with due process. The incident, which sparked public outrage and protests, occurred after a case of housebreaking and theft was reported at the Arandun Police Division on April 30, 2026. The police emphasized that the girl’s detention was lawful and part of ongoing investigations into the crime.

The police explained that the prime suspect in the case, Timothy Aransiola, a 19-year-old male, had been on the division’s watchlist and fled after the crime was reported. Intelligence later revealed that the suspect was being sheltered and assisted by his sister, Esther Aransiola, the 16-year-old girl in question. On May 1, 2026, the minor was invited to the station to assist with investigations into her alleged role in aiding the suspect’s escape and obstructing his lawful arrest. According to the police, she was not arrested but was instead taken into custody for questioning under standard procedures.

The statement clarified that Esther Aransiola was cautioned, gave her statement, and was subsequently released to her guardian on bond. The command stressed that no violation of her rights occurred and that the entire process followed legal protocols. The police also noted that the viral videos circulating online did not reflect the full context of the situation, leading to public misunderstanding and unrest. They urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information that could incite tension or mislead the public.

The Kwara State Police Command remains focused on apprehending Timothy Aransiola and bringing him to justice. They reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring transparency, and protecting citizens’ rights. The statement also warned against the dangers of misinformation, especially in the digital age, where videos can be taken out of context. As investigations continue, the police are working to maintain peace and public trust in their operations. The incident underscores the importance of verifying information before sharing it, particularly when it involves law enforcement and vulnerable individuals.
