Rivers United head coach Finidi George has credited a crucial tactical shift in the second half for his team’s commanding 3-0 victory over Abia Warriors in Matchday 36 of the 2024/2025 NPFL season, a result that keeps the Pride of Rivers firmly in the title race. The win, secured at home in Port Harcourt, saw Rivers United climb to second place on the league table with 61 points, just one behind leaders Rangers, who have 62 points from 36 games. The match, played on Sunday, was a turning point for the team after a sluggish first half, which Finidi admitted saw his side struggle to create clear chances against Abia Warriors’ low block.
Wasiu Falolu broke the deadlock just five minutes after the restart, giving Rivers United the momentum they needed. Timothy Zachaaria extended the lead in the 72nd minute, and Bello Babatunde sealed the victory with a third goal in the 89th minute. Finidi described the performance as “outstanding,” acknowledging that the team’s initial approach of passing around the midfield failed to break down the opposition’s defensive setup. He explained that he adjusted the strategy in the second half, opting for more direct play and long balls, which disrupted Abia Warriors’ defensive structure and opened up scoring opportunities.
“We couldn’t create much in the first half because they were playing a low block, and we were trying to pass the ball around, but we didn’t go direct,” Finidi told reporters after the match. “In the second half, we went more direct, used more direct balls, and that created a lot of problems for them. When we got the first goal, it motivated the boys to go for a second, and after the second goal, I knew it was all over.” The coach emphasized the importance of mental resilience and tactical flexibility, noting that the team’s ability to adapt was key to the result.
Looking ahead, Rivers United face a critical away fixture against Wikki Tourists in Bauchi on Matchday 37, scheduled for Sunday at the New Jos Stadium. Finidi stressed that the remaining games are vital, with the title likely to be decided on the final day of the season. He pointed out that Rangers will face Ikorodu City, while Rivers United will take on Katsina United, making the outcome of both matches unpredictable. “We’ll be going there to win,” Finidi said. “Our away form is very good. We have to bring that away form against Wikki Tourists. If we can do that, we’ll win.”
With the season entering its final stretch, every point matters, and Finidi remains focused on maintaining consistency. The coach’s confidence in his squad’s ability to perform under pressure suggests that Rivers United are determined to challenge for the NPFL title, even as the race intensifies. The coming weeks will test their resolve, but with momentum on their side, the Pride of Rivers are not ready to give up the fight.
