Tension Escalates as Bandits Attack Former Zamfara Commissioner

A former Commissioner for Religious Affairs in Zamfara State, Abdullahi Maharazu Mafara, has narrowly escaped death after being shot in the leg by suspected bandits during an ambush on his vehicle. The attack occurred on Saturday as he travelled from Talata Mafara to Gusau to attend an All Progressives Congress (APC) meeting. Gunmen ambushed the vehicle along the route and opened fire, striking the cleric during the assault. Despite the violence, Mafara survived and was rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.

Security sources confirmed that the incident took place along a major highway frequently used by commuters and government officials. The attackers, believed to be bandits operating in the region, targeted the vehicle without warning. Mafara, who also served as a former local government chairman, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. According to a security alert issued by Bakatsine, the bullet was successfully removed, and he is currently receiving medical care at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital.

The attack has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara State, particularly along key transportation corridors. These highways have become hotspots for armed bandits, who continue to carry out attacks with little resistance. The targeting of a high-profile figure like Mafara underscores the growing risk faced by civilians and public officials alike. Bakatsine expressed alarm over the persistent vulnerability of road users, questioning why such attacks continue despite repeated warnings and security measures.

“With even high-profile figures now being targeted, how are highways in Zamfara still so vulnerable to persistent bandit attacks?” Bakatsine asked in the alert. The incident highlights the urgent need for improved security protocols and increased military presence along critical routes. Local communities and government agencies are now calling for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence in road safety.

Mafara’s survival is seen as a miracle by many, but the attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by residents in the region. The incident has also sparked renewed debate about the effectiveness of current security strategies in Zamfara. As authorities investigate the attack, there is growing pressure to ensure that such incidents do not become routine. The future of safe travel in the state now hinges on decisive and sustained security interventions.
