A 70-year-old Nigerian pilgrim, Hajiya Rukayya Haliru from Nasarawa State, has died in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, during the ongoing Hajj pilgrimage. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, as confirmed by the Nasarawa State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. Hajiya Haliru, who hailed from Keffi Local Government Area, fell ill before her death, prompting immediate medical intervention from the board’s medical team. Despite their efforts, she passed away in the early hours of the morning.
The Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mallam Idris Ahmad Almakura, disclosed the news during a press briefing in Makkah. He stated that the late pilgrim had reported feeling unwell, and medical personnel responded promptly to provide care. “She complained of illness and despite medical efforts, she drew her last breath this morning,” Almakura said, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
Following her death, officials from the pilgrims’ board, along with members of Hajiya Haliru’s family, were present at the hospital to oversee the necessary funeral procedures. Her remains were transported to the Grand Mosque in Makkah for the Janazah prayer, a key Islamic ritual performed for deceased Muslims. The prayer was attended by family members, board officials, and fellow Nigerian pilgrims, underscoring the communal spirit of the Hajj.
Almakura used the moment to urge all Nigerian pilgrims to prioritize their health during the sacred journey. He emphasized the importance of reporting any illness immediately to the medical teams stationed across the pilgrimage sites. He also extended heartfelt condolences to the Nasarawa State Government, the immediate family of the deceased, and the staff and management of the pilgrims’ welfare board.
In a separate statement, one of Hajiya Haliru’s relatives, Abdulwab Aboki, praised the board for its swift and compassionate response. He commended the officials for their transparency and care throughout the burial process, noting that their support brought comfort during a difficult time. The incident highlights the challenges pilgrims may face during Hajj, especially those of advanced age, and reinforces the need for vigilance and preparedness.
As the pilgrimage continues, the Nigerian community in Makkah remains united in prayer and solidarity. The death of Hajiya Rukayya Haliru serves as a reminder of the spiritual and physical demands of Hajj, and the importance of medical readiness and emotional support for all pilgrims.
