Rivers United’s shocking exit from the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League first preliminary round has been described as the club’s worst performance in recent history by assistant coach Yemi Olanrewaju, following a dramatic 2-2 draw against FC San Pedro of Côte d’Ivoire at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday. The Nigerians had secured a crucial 1-1 draw in the first leg in Ivory Coast, giving them hope for progression. However, two early goals — scored by Adéwimi Alabi in the 14th minute and Issouf Dosso in the 19th — shattered their momentum and set the tone for a disorganized display.
Despite efforts to recover, Rivers United managed to pull one back through Chukwuemeka Mbaoma’s penalty in the 43rd minute before Douglas Iyowuna equalized with another spot-kick five minutes before full time.
