Ben Iroha, former Super Eagles defender and 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup assistant coach, has declared that the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season could produce the most credible league champions in decades, citing unprecedented competitiveness and improved organisation. Speaking exclusively to Completesports.com from Texas, USA, Iroha highlighted how the tight standings at both ends of the table reflect a well-run and fair competition. With only three games remaining, no team — not even league leaders Rangers or second-placed Rivers United — can confidently claim the title, according to Iroha.
He emphasized that even teams ranked third and fourth still have strong chances, while the relegation battle remains fiercely contested. “It goes to show how tough and organised the league has been this season,” Iroha said. “And it means we’re likely going to have more realistic and acceptable winners for the first time in many years.” He credited the league organisers for their efforts, noting that disciplinary actions are now being handled promptly and fairly, with clubs accepting punishments without widespread controversy.
Iroha, who played for Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Flash Flamingoes before serving as assistant coach at Heartland during their 2009 CAF Champions League final run, also praised the league’s scheduling. For the first time, NPFL fixtures are aligning closely with major European leagues like the English Premier League, which also has three to four games left. “This synchronisation is a big step forward,” he said, adding that it enhances the league’s global appeal and professionalism.
Despite these positives, Iroha pointed to commercialisation as a critical area needing improvement. He stressed the importance of increasing the league’s visibility on television to attract more investors and sponsors. “Football is all about business,” he said. “Once the league begins to command strong visibility on TV, more investors will come in.” He urged stakeholders to build on the current momentum and ensure that the winner of the 2025/2026 NPFL season can replicate their performance on the continental stage in the following CAF inter-club competitions.
The 2025/2026 NPFL season has shown significant progress in administration, fairness, and scheduling, setting a new benchmark for Nigerian football. As the final stretch unfolds, all eyes are on how the league will close out this historic campaign.
