Woman Behind Kano’s ‘Underwear Campaign’ Appointed to Political Role

Woman Behind Kanos Underwear Campaign Appointed to Political Role

Fatima Naseer Teemahcool, popularly known as Teema Cool and the Chairman of Gida-Gida TikTokers, has been appointed as the officer in charge of women affairs in Nassarawa Local Government, Kano State. The appointment was made by the local government’s chairman, Yusuf Imam Ogan Boye, and formally documented in a letter signed by the local government secretary, Ado Mohammed Hotoro. The decision recognizes Teema Cool’s contributions and commitment to the development of the local government, according to the official communication. She is now expected to perform her duties in line with the council’s established rules and regulations.

Teema Cool gained national attention last week after leading a controversial display of red underwear during a rally in Kano State held in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu. The act was widely interpreted as a mocking gesture directed at former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, sparking backlash from various quarters. The incident drew criticism from religious leaders, civil society groups, and political figures across the country. In response, Teema Cool issued a public apology, stating she would not repeat the act and expressing regret for the offense caused.

Despite the controversy, her appointment highlights the growing influence of social media personalities in Nigerian local governance. Teema Cool, who has become a recognizable figure in Kano politics, is now officially part of the local government’s administrative structure. Her role in women’s affairs may signal a shift in how local governments engage with youth and digital influencers to promote community development.

Meanwhile, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has distanced himself from the underwear display, denying any involvement or prior knowledge of the event. He emphasized that the act contradicts the cultural and religious values of the people of Kano. The governor’s condemnation underscores the sensitivity of public behavior in a conservative region like Kano, where cultural norms play a significant role in political and social life.

The appointment of Teema Cool raises questions about the intersection of social media activism and formal governance in Nigeria. While her past actions have drawn criticism, her new role may offer a platform for positive engagement with youth and women’s issues. As she steps into her official duties, the public will be watching closely to see how she balances her online persona with the responsibilities of public service. This appointment could mark a new chapter in how local governments leverage digital influencers for community development.
