Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has firmly denied any involvement or approval of the controversial display of red underwear by a group of young women during a rally held in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, over the weekend. The incident, which quickly gained attention on social media, sparked widespread debate and criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of the event’s content. The Governor stated that he had no prior knowledge of the rally or the activities that took place during it, emphasizing that the event was organized without official government endorsement.
Videos circulating online showed young women holding up red underwear as part of what was claimed to be an empowerment initiative. Some reports suggested the event was linked to the Kano State government, leading to public scrutiny and calls for accountability. However, Governor Yusuf clarified that the rally was not sanctioned by his administration and was not part of any official program. He expressed deep concern over the incident, particularly given the cultural and religious sensitivities in Kano State.
Speaking during a special prayer session at the Government House in Kano, the Governor reiterated his stance, saying, “You have heard what happened. We were going about our normal activities when I was informed that some young women displayed inappropriate items. I was not aware of it.” He further condemned the act, stating that such behavior contradicts the values upheld by the people of Kano, especially in a predominantly Muslim society. “Such actions are against our culture and the teachings of Islam, and we strongly condemn them,” he added.
The incident has drawn reactions from various quarters, with some criticizing the organizers for misusing the platform to promote what many view as indecent content. Others have called for better oversight of public events, especially those involving government figures or themes of empowerment. Despite the controversy, the Governor maintained that the event was not affiliated with his administration and urged all stakeholders to uphold decency and respect in public gatherings.
As the debate continues, the Kano State government is expected to review its protocols for approving and monitoring public events. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity in public programming, particularly in a diverse and religiously conscious nation like Nigeria. Moving forward, officials may face increased pressure to ensure that all public initiatives align with societal norms and values.
