Residents of Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State have shown remarkable bravery by successfully repelling a bandit attack, preventing the invaders from entering their village despite the tragic loss of 10 lives during the assault. The incident, which occurred recently, saw community members unite to defend their homes after receiving intelligence about the impending attack. Although the bandits were unable to breach the village, they targeted fleeing residents, shooting them at close range and leaving multiple bodies behind in the Nagodi area, a village adjacent to Gurbi.
A local resident speaking to Daily Trust confirmed that the attackers were driven away by the community’s resistance. He stated, “As I speak to you now, there are more than 10 corpses in Nagodi area which is a village in front of Gurbi. After they left, the dead bodies were transported back to Gurbi.” The resident expressed deep anguish over the delayed response from security forces, emphasizing that they had alerted authorities beforehand. “We had earlier alerted security operatives when we heard a rumour of the attack, but they did not respond until after our people were killed. Only then did they arrive and begin evacuating the bodies,” he added.
Another source close to the Gurbi community leader’s palace corroborated the account, confirming that the bandits failed to enter the village but managed to attack those who fled in panic. The source noted that the attackers specifically targeted vulnerable residents who were running for safety, resulting in the fatal shootings. This incident underscores the growing insecurity in the region, where communities are increasingly forced to defend themselves due to perceived gaps in security response.
Kankara has become a focal point of renewed bandit activities in Katsina State. Just three days prior to the Gurbi attack, bandits struck Zangon Kankara, setting two houses and a car ablaze and abducting two individuals. These attacks highlight the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the area, despite ongoing government efforts to restore peace. The lack of timely intervention by security agencies has further fueled frustration among residents, who now face both violence and neglect.
The Gurbi community’s resistance demonstrates the resilience of rural Nigerians in the face of escalating insecurity. However, the loss of lives and the continued vulnerability of communities underscore the urgent need for improved security coordination and faster response times. As the region grapples with these challenges, the hope remains that authorities will take decisive action to protect lives and restore lasting peace.
