Court Postpones Hearing on PDP National Convention Case in Ibadan

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has rescheduled the hearing of a motion concerning the upcoming People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention to Wednesday, November 12. Justice Ladiran Akintola presided over Monday’s proceedings in a case filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi against the PDP, its acting national chairman, and other parties.

The courthouse witnessed heightened security measures, with officers deployed at the entrance and strategic locations throughout the premises. Security personnel conducted thorough screenings of all attendees, including legal practitioners, while media representatives were denied access to the courtroom.

The court session follows last week’s ruling on an ex parte motion that permitted the PDP to proceed with its National Convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan. After hearing arguments from counsel representing both sides, Justice Akintola instructed the parties to submit all necessary documentation to ensure efficient processing of the case.

The lawsuit, initiated by the claimant Folahan Malomo Adelabi, seeks to prevent the defendants – including Acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (representing himself and the National Convention Organizing Committee members), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) – from interfering with the planned convention.

In its previous ruling, the court had mandated the PDP leadership to strictly follow the previously announced guidelines, timetable, and schedule of activities for the convention. The case’s resolution could have significant implications for the opposition party’s national gathering, which aims to address crucial organizational matters.

The court will reconvene on Wednesday to consider all pending applications related to the case.
